This seminar sets the stage for learning about volunteer management and prepares you to participate knowledgeably in all the learning opportunities Everyone Ready has to offer.
Learning Objectives
After completing the seminar and discussing its content, participants will be able to:
- Explain the scope of volunteer involvement, including who “volunteers” are and what they do.
- Articulate clearly why organizations want and need volunteers.
- Create the foundation for effective volunteer engagement, assuring a welcoming climate for volunteers and employees, supportive policies, and necessary resources.
- Describe the 12 basic elements of volunteer management – and why everyone in an organization needs to be successful in preparing for and partnering with volunteers.
- Have the context to participate in the Everyone Ready learning opportunities coming monthly.
Ideal Audience
This seminar is designed for everyone in the organization – at every level and in any role (including volunteers who lead other volunteers) – so that all learners start from the same perspective with basic principles, which will be reinforced throughout Everyone Ready.
Content Overview
In this introductory seminar, we’re going to set the stage for learning about volunteer management. It’s an orientation to Everyone Ready that will help you to participate knowledgeably in all the learning opportunities to come.
We’ll look at who is a part of the Everyone Ready community of learners and how you represent the scope of what volunteers do and where they do it. Then we’ll discuss:
- What do we mean when we use the word “volunteer”? What are all the different forms of service that term includes?
- Who volunteers today?
- Why organizations involve volunteers in the first place. (The answers may surprise you a bit.)
- How to establish the best climate and working conditions for both volunteers and employees to succeed.
- What needs to be in place to support volunteer engagement: establishing policies and allocating resources for volunteer and employee accomplishment.
- The 12 elements of successful volunteer management.
While a volunteer program manager may have general responsibility for many of the tasks discussed, in practice these are shared with everyone who interacts with volunteers on a daily basis. It takes a village to raise a child and an entire organization to incorporate volunteers well.
