Leaders In Excellence

What is the Leaders In Excellence Alliance?

Leaders In Excellence is an alliance of respected individuals, corporate partners, philanthropic funders and next generation leaders committed to a vision of establishing the highest standards of excellence, accountability, governance and management for Alabama’s nonprofit sector. Members of the Leaders In Excellence Alliance allows AAN to deliver the Standards For Excellence® initiative to all nonprofit organizations, regardless of budget size, mission or their geographic location within the state.

What is Standards For Excellence®?

The Standards For Excellence® Institute is a national initiative promoting the highest standards of ethics and accountability in nonprofit governance, management and operations, and to facilitate adherence to those standards for all nonprofits. Alabama is the ninth state in America to apply for the distinction of being a lead replication state in partnership with the state of Maryland and original Standards For Excellence® funder the Carnegie Corporation.

The centerpiece of the Institute’s program is the Standards For Excellence®: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector. The Alabama Association of Nonprofits, in partnership with the Institute, is dedicated to working with nonprofits to deliver a comprehensive system of educational tools to enable organizations to improve their governance, management and accountability practices. Organizations may also apply for a certificate of excellence from the Alabama Association of Nonprofits, our partnering institutions of higher education and the Standards For Excellence® Institute designating their nonprofit as meeting the strictest levels of organizational excellence and accountability within the nation.

How will my Investment Impact Nonprofits?

Your investment allows AAN to:

  • Provide educational programming to nonprofit executives, volunteers and board members to identify gaps and to celebrate achievements within individual nonprofit organizations, using 55 performance indicators as benchmarks for success.

  • Provide ongoing consultation and support for up to two years to nonprofits that complete the 16-hour Standards For Excellence® Institute course of study as they seek to implement the strategies provided to them as a graduate of the Institute.

  • Monitor the success of those organizations that complete the Institute and that apply for certification by assisting them in the application process, and then post-certification measure their impact to highlight the return on investment for funders and the community.
