AAN’s 2023 State of the Sector report, incoming Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute (NELI) class assessments, and recent visits to Alabama nonprofits by our presenter, Steve Taylor, indicate that large numbers of nonprofits in Alabama do not have relationships with their federal representatives. Most of us are simply laser-focused on our work and don't see the value of engaging with federal representatives.
While this is not an “issue advocacy” presentation, this training will be useful for nonprofits that may wish to become more effective advocates.

Advancing Your Goals:
How to build relationships with our elected officials and why it’s in your organization’s best interest
In this free online webinar, Steve will show nonprofit leaders how simply building a relationship with federal elected representatives can add value and advance the goals of a nonprofit and how, conversely, failing to engage representatives can undermine a nonprofit's mission. He will talk through how to initiate engagement with your representative, how to build the relationship, and how you can do this from Alabama.
While this is not an “issue advocacy” presentation, this training will be useful for nonprofits that may wish to become more effective advocates.
This is a crucial time to share this information, because:
-
501(c)(3) nonprofits are in a precarious position with Congress. Many U.S. Senators and Representatives, and their staffs, have a limited understanding of how nonprofits function and the crucial role nonprofits play in communities.
-
At the same time, there is a drumbeat of criticism of nonprofits in Washington, DC. While most of the criticism is unfounded, the criticism is filling the void in knowledge about the value of nonprofits to local communities across the U.S.
-
The unfounded criticism combined with insufficient knowledge has laid the foundation for Congress to enact laws that may be harmful to nonprofits in Alabama.
