Principles of Culture: How to build a positive culture in the workplace

This presentation explores the principles of building and sustaining a healthy, positive workplace culture. Participants will examine the characteristics of positive and toxic cultures and learn how culture impacts employee engagement and organizational performance. Through discussion, self-assessment, and practical strategies, participants will gain tools to evaluate their current culture and implement sustainable practices that promote accountability, connection, and well-being.

Your Trainers

Susan Sellers is the CEO of United Ability and has devoted her career to serving vulnerable populations. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and English Composition from Texas Christian University and a Juris Doctor from Baylor University. After beginning her career in Washington, DC with the National Center for Victims of Crime, she returned to Waco, where she led public policy and development efforts for two nonprofits before serving as Executive Director of Communities in Schools of Central Texas.

Susan later spent 14 years in New Orleans strengthening nonprofit infrastructure as a consultant with Nonprofit Knowledge Works, managing major post–Hurricane Katrina recovery initiatives, and helping restructure behavioral health and disability services across several Louisiana parishes. After relocating to Birmingham in 2014, she served as President of the St. Vincent’s Foundation of Alabama, where she advanced programs for underserved communities. Susan is the founder of Forge Cancer Survivorship Center and continues to serve on their board. She joined United Ability as CEO in April 2021, becoming the organization’s fourth leader since its founding in 1948.

Sara Nall joined Mitchell’s Place in February of 2017 and currently serves as the Executive Director. Sara received her bachelor’s from Auburn University and holds a master’s from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Special Education with an emphasis in Behavioral Disorders.

Sara has over 30 years of experience rooted in special education. Her journey started as a special educator at Engel Day Treatment Center at UAB, then she transitioned to a self-contained classroom for children with behavior disorders in Birmingham City Schools which led her to Mountain Brook High School where she taught for more than 25 years.

  2. Differentiate between positive and toxic workplace cultures, identifying key characteristics and warning signs of each.
  3. Explain the impact of culture on employee engagement, customer satisfaction, retention, innovation, and overall organizational success.
  4. Identify the core components of a positive culture, including connection to purpose, work, team, goals, and well-being.
  5. Assess your current workplace culture using structured tools such as surveys, feedback sessions, and SWOT analysis.
  6. Develop actionable strategies to strengthen leadership practices, improve communication, address red flags, and sustain a healthy organizational culture.
